How to Build Unshakable Confidence and Overcome Self-Doubt

We’ve all been there.

Watching someone in the room speak their mind effortlessly, make connections with ease, and radiate confidence as if it’s second nature.

Meanwhile, you find yourself holding back—overthinking, second-guessing, and feeling like your voice is lost in the background.

If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone.

how to build confidence

For years, I struggled with self-doubt.

I avoided speaking up in meetings, held back from sharing my thoughts, and felt invisible in both my professional and personal life.

But I discovered that confidence isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you can build.

Today, I’ll share the steps that helped me transform my self-doubt into unshakeable confidence and boost both my confidence and self-esteem.

Where Self-Doubt Begins

Growing up, I watched others navigate social situations with ease, while I felt like an outsider looking in.

The idea of drawing attention to myself made me uneasy.

As an adult, that same fear of speaking up and putting myself forward filled me with dread.

I knew I had ideas worth sharing, but doubt always found a way to silence me.

I realised that if I wanted to grow—personally and professionally—I needed to stop waiting for confidence to magically appear.

I had to take action to build it.

And once I did, I noticed how much it impacted my mental health and general wellbeing.

The Four Steps That Changed Everything

I spent years studying confidence—why some people seem to have it effortlessly and others, like me, struggled.

Through trial and error, I discovered four key steps that shifted everything:

  1. The Pretend to be Confident Game: I started by mimicking confident people. If I looked, walked, and spoke like them, would I start feeling confident too? Surprisingly, yes—at least temporarily. While this wasn’t a lasting solution, it was the first step in pushing me outside my comfort zone
  2. Revisiting My Confident Moments: I looked back on times when I did feel confident—even in small ways. What was different about those moments? I realized that confidence isn’t something you have or don’t have—it’s something that can be recreated by tapping into the right mindset, focus, and emotional state
  3. Belief Stacking: I dug deeper: What did I truly need to believe to feel confident in any situation? I realized confidence isn’t just about skills—it’s about the beliefs behind them.
For example, if I wanted to be confident speaking up in meetings, I had to believe my ideas were valuable, that people wanted to hear them, and that I could handle any reaction
  4. The Absolute Confidence Method: This was a game changer. Confidence, in its essence, is the absence of self-doubt. So for new situations I hadn’t faced before, I mapped out every possible challenge I could face—and found solutions for each one in advance. The more prepared I was, the less doubt I had. This gave me a level of confidence that felt truly unshakable

These are just some of the steps at the heart of my coaching approach— which I explore in greater depth within my Inner-Core Confidence Coaching Programme.

The Transformation: How Confidence Becomes Natural

Confidence isn’t about never feeling doubt—it’s about knowing you have the tools to handle whatever comes your way.

Once I cleared my old fears and aligned with what truly mattered to me, confidence stopped feeling like something I had to force. It became natural.

Imagine walking into any situation—whether it’s a meeting, a social event, or a difficult conversation—knowing that no matter what happens, you’ll handle it.

That’s the power of real confidence.

And when you consistently show up that way, it doesn’t just change how others see you—it helps you genuinely feel good in your own skin.

If parts of this article resonated, it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you

Often, it means something within you has been trying to protect or support you — even if it hasn’t felt that way.

Real change tends to come not from pushing harder, but from understanding what’s happening beneath the surface.

“I’m not just coping at work — I’m thriving. Better than I’ve ever felt.”
— June Kerr

Real People, Real Shifts:

"The anxiety isn’t just under control — it’s gone..."
Before working with Paul, I was drowning in anxiety. After my marriage ended, I couldn’t sleep or function — even small things like leaving the house felt overwhelming.

I had to return to work, but the thought of it filled me with dread. I’d always struggled with imposter syndrome, and I knew I needed help. A friend recommended Paul, and I’m so glad I went ahead.

The change has been incredible. The anxiety isn’t just under control — it’s gone. I feel calmer, more in control, and connected to the world around me. I’ve even started singing in a band and performing at open mic nights — something I never thought I’d have the confidence to do.

I’m thriving at work and in life. Honestly, I feel better than I ever have — and I’d recommend Paul to anyone.
June Kerr, Datchet
“Working with Paul has changed my life...”
“Personally I'd just like to say I would definitely recommend Paul.

I used to get really nervous having to stand up in front of people and say my name. I'd get nervous, and the more nervous I got the more I stuttered, the more I stuttered, the more nervous I got.

So coaching with Paul has changed my life. As a result I had this presentation recently and actually felt confident standing up and saying my name.

I actually thought: “Oo, I get to stand up in front of everybody and let them know my name. This is actually exciting, people are going to get to know who I am.”
Emily Nye, Wokingham
"I just feel relaxed. I don't go into panic mode..."
"I had a problem with blushing. I'd go red at inappropriate times which would then cause me to feel inferior and stupid.

Even before someone directs their attention to me, my heart would go like the clappers, I'd think oh god, oh god, what if they talk to me, what if they say my name? Oh no I'm going red.

So I'd had enough really. I got to the point where it was interfering with my work life.

Even the first time that I met you, you were very easy to talk to.

Since then, it's like something completely new has happened. I just feel relaxed. I don't go into panic mode. I don't go red at all, not one little bit. It's a great feeling."
Vicky, Reading
"I feel more confident in myself than I have in years..."
I came to Paul feeling overwhelmed, with racing thoughts and constant anxiety that was starting to affect my life. I'd tried other approaches like CBT, but nothing really got to the heart of it.

From the first session, it felt different. Paul took the time to understand me and tailored everything to what I needed. That made all the difference.

Through our work, I realised that under the anxiety was a lack of confidence and a distorted self-image. Once we uncovered that, everything started to shift.

Now, I feel more confident in myself than I have in years. I don’t overthink things like I used to. I know how to calm myself and see things from a more compassionate, grounded perspective.

It’s real change—and I’m really grateful.
Maddy, Reading
"I feel in control of what I’m doing..."
"When I came to see Paul I felt quite desperate. I had relationship problems with my daughter and my partner. I think things had been going wrong for years, but lack of confidence and constantly beating myself up has had a huge effect on me.

I wanted to be the person that I know I am deep inside, but instead I seemed to be this person who had no confidence.

So then I thought I would try something different. I found your website, liked the idea of a trial session, so I thought I’d get in contact with you.

I felt different from the very first session. I used to bottle things up completely, but after the sessions I just feel so much more in control of me. I think that’s how I would sum it up. I feel in control of what I’m doing and what I want to do."
Jane Moore, Reading
"There are lots of positive things in life..."
"I was suffering with anxiety and finding it hard to go to work and function normally. My dad said he thought there was an underlying problem because I'd had similar thoughts and problems before, and I just know for me that there was something deeper going on.

After the session I felt like there was a sense of freedom and understanding.

Nowadays I feel very positive pretty much all of the time. My friends can't believe it, they're like “wow!” I'm a lot more relaxed. I'm a lot more positive, and I feel like I can handle just about everything. There are lots of positive things in life.

So thank you."
Tara, Twyford
"I have so many more opportunities..."
"I approached Paul because I felt I had no control over my own life.

My Biggest issue was I felt like I could not move forward with my life because I always put things off.

I felt like I had a massive blockage and although I had great ideas and I was full of motivation at the time, I always seemed to stop mid flow and put everything off until another day.

After just one coaching session with Paul he helped me see things in a completely different way. He brought me from a place of fear and procrastination to a place of being able to do the things I had always put off. The fear has gone and I feel completely invigorated. I feel I have so many more opportunities."
Lynden Cassidy, Reading
"Freedom at Last!"
"I went to see Paul the day before my driving test. I was feeling so nervous I was worried that I would mess up as would be too jittery.

Paul was great, he worked his magic on me and after the session I felt really positive and completely calm about the test. Any nerves I had just helped to sharpen me up and I was able to keep my cool.

I am delighted to say I passed my Driving test and I am so happy. Freedom at Last! Thanks Paul, I am amazed at how you managed to turn me from a jittery mess into a calm and collected, positive happy driver.

You're the best!"
Samantha Aldworth, Caversham

About Paul

Hi I’m Paul,

For many years, I’ve worked with people who appear capable on the outside but feel anxious, self-doubting, or unsure of themselves when it matters most.

What I’ve seen again and again is that confidence struggles aren’t a lack of ability — they’re usually the result of inner systems working hard to protect you, even when that protection no longer fits your life.

My work focuses on helping people understand and realign those inner patterns, so confidence starts to feel calmer, steadier, and more natural — even under pressure.
